"The New Bay Bridge"
SEPTEMBER 3rd - 28th,  2013

New Works by Christy Kovacs and John Ruszel

Vessel Gallery celebrates the opening of 'The NEW Bay Bridge' with artworks by Christy Kovacs and John Ruszel.  The exciting new structure, essential to our daily lives in the Bay Area, will open soon, almost 25 years after a portion collapsed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.  Christy Kovacs and John Ruszel have revealed through their artworks the importance of such a man-made structure, highlighting the social cultural impact, the thoughts behind the engineering of such a feat, and the spiritual strength inherent in undertaking an effort to overcome nature.  Kovacs has taken her photographic weavings of freeways to include an array of mediums including photo assemblage, combine painting, and sculpture.  Ruszel continues his explorations of tension, suspension, and fulcrum, architecting sculpture with precision and finely honed engineering.

"Woven Through Time"

FEBRUARY 28th - MARCH 31st, 2012

Group Show Celebrating National Woman's Month
Natalie Cartwright, Ema, Mari Marks, Beili Liu, Liz Koerner, Christy Kovacs, and Allyce Wood

"Woven Through Time" looks at the nature of women's art and craft considering historical development.  Probing the notion of "woman's work" we examine subjects or methods traditionally dominated by men and how that influences women's artwork, whether through subject or direct method /technique.  Are these gender specific, reactive or political, and part of a larger environment?  What remains, what is relevant to the viewer?  Is there interconnectivity of woman's hand work and artwork?

ARTIST TALK: MARCH 10th, 2-4pm
A panel of artists share their experiences and perspectives as women artists. This afternoon discussion will explore notions of gender specificity in media or subject and how that has evolved over time for contemporary art.

East Bay Open Studios 2011

WHEN: June 4th-5th and 11th-12th
11 AM - 6 PM

WHERE: 98 Broadway @ Embarcadero, Jack London Square, Oakland, CA 94607  MAP

I am excited to be participating in East Bay Open Studios this year, an annual event where artists throughout the East Bay open their studios to the public.  Since I don't have a studio of my own, my photographic weavings, and various other paintings, will be on display at the old Barnes & Noble building in Jack London Square, for the first two weekends in June, along with the work of 43 other artists.  Please stop by and say hello!

I will have a live weaving, in process, which I will work on over the course of the two weekends so visitors can see how I make these monstrous, time-consuming beasts.  I will also have a few small paintings of my Animals in Heels, some greeting cards, and small/affordable prints.
